Messy, slimy, oozy, electrifying, glowing fun! DHDC Science Labs feature hands-on, engaging activities for students in grades PK through 12 addressing a variety of science, math and engineering concepts.

  • Each lab is approximately 45 minutes long.
  • Maximum of 30 students in a lab at one time.
  • Multiple lab rotations available to accommodate larger groups.

BubbleMania

Grades Pre-K-2    

Critical thinking, making predictions exploring shapes and motor skill development are all part of the fun in BubbleMania as students explore the science of bubbles and bubble engineering!

Grades PK and Kinder explore and compare 2D and 3D shapes in this introduction to the scientific method.

Grades 1-2 investigate bubble strength and integrity as students discover variables by testing three different bubble solutions in search of the ultimate indestructible bubble!

Color-rific

Grades Pre-K-5

One of our most popular labs with both students and teachers, Color-rific explores concepts of mixtures, physical changes and chromatography in a uniquely colorful way! Students will love this creative approach to science and enjoy creating their own artistic science project to take home.

Grades PK-2 explore physical changes in matter and are introduced to mixtures as they create their own colorful concoctions!

Grades 3-5 delve deeper into physical changes and mixtures as they explore the process of chromatography and discover the real-world applications for this scientific process.

Magnet Mayhem

Grades Pre-K-5

Magnetic forces are at work all around us. Magnet Mayhem investigates properties of magnetism and the relationship between magnetism and electricity.

Grades PK-2 investigate properties of magnetism including polarity, magnetic vs. non-magnetic items and explore where magnets are used in our daily lives.

Grades 3-5 explore the relationship between magnetism and electricity and discover how properties of magnetism are at work in modern technology.

Ooey Gooey Science

Grades Pre-K-5

The name says it all. Shapes, states of matter, solutions, and physical and chemical changes are just a few of scientific principles examined in this highly entertaining lab. 

Grades PK-2 investigate solutions and variables in experiments as they create two different oozes and compare their characteristics.

Grades 3-5 explore solutions, chemical reactions and properties of polymers as they create and test oozes using different ingredients.

The Mysteries of Matter

Grades K-5

From basic properties of matter to a study of polymers and non-Newtonian fluids, The Mysteries of Matter examines solids, liquids and gases DHDC style – entertaining, slightly messy and oh so fun! 

Grades K-2 examine properties of solids, liquids and gases and experiment with physical changes to matter.

Grades 3-5 assess physical and chemical changes to matter and explore special classes of matter such as polymers and non-Newtonian fluids.

What Makes Weather?

Grades K-5

Air pressure, cloud formation and the science of thunderstorms are investigated in this interactive lab.  Students will examine the atmospheric conditions that combine to create our ever-changing Panhandle weather and learn important thunderstorm safety rules.

Grades K-2 are introduced to air pressure, cloud formation and the science of lightning as students discover how these elements come together to create a thunderstorm.

Grades 3-5 take an in-depth look at the atmospheric elements which must be present for thunderstorms and lightning to form and explore the science of thunderstorm formation.

Fossil Hunters

Grades 1-5

Calling all paleontologists! Students dig for genuine fossils using the techniques practiced by professional paleontologists; determine whether or not their find is a true fossil; and then examine, identify and date their discoveries using the Fossil Hunters charts.

Grossology

Grades 2-5

Just as the name implies, Grossology examines the science at work behind the most impolite bodily biology. Where does poop come from? Why do we burp? Your students will never forget this hands-on, interactive tour of the digestive system!

Electricity & Circuits

Grades 3-8

Using special conductive dough, students will explore properties of electrical energy including basic circuitry, conductors and insulators.

Grades 3-5 construct and evaluate different types of electrical circuits while examining how electricity flows through a conductor.

Grades 6-8 experiment with circuitry and resistance and create their own working battery!

Illumination: Light and Optics

Grades 3-8

What is light? How does it travel? Does light have color? Using prisms, mirrors and spectroscopes, students will analyze the amazing properties of light.

Grades 3-4 explore properties of light including white light, the light spectrum and how light affects vision and perception of color.

Grades 5-8 analyze properties of light, compare refraction and reflection and investigate the relationship between light and color.

Cover Your Bases: pH Chemistry

Grades 4-8

Explore properties of acids and bases in this lively chemistry lab! Students will test liquids using an indicator and rank their results using the pH scale.

Grades 4-5 are introduced to the concept of pH as they test and rank a series of liquids from most acidic to most basic using the pH scale.

Grades 6-8 determine the pH of a series of liquids and discover how to neutralize an acid or a base in a most colorful way!

Liquefied! The Science of Density

Grades 4-8

This series of investigations examines properties of density as it relates to liquids and explores the relationships among density, mass and volume.

Grades 4-5 experiment with a variety of liquids and their densities as they discover that not all liquids are created equal!

Grades 6-8 investigate the properties of liquid density in greater detail as they experiment with both buoyancy and viscosity.

Alternative Energy

Grades 4-12

Students will explore alternative energy sources and evaluate their effectiveness by testing the amount of power generated by each source.

Grades 4-6 explore wind as an energy source by evaluating the effectiveness of wind turbines and examining the relationship between turbine design and amount of power generated.

Grades 7-9 evaluate hydrogen as an energy source by attempting to create hydrogen fuel cells and determine their energy output.

Grades 10-12 explore real-world issues regarding alternative energy sources by engineering a working, small-scale solar farm to maximize energy output.

Engineering 101: Machines at Work

Grades 4-12

In this inquiry-based introduction to machines and engineering, students build their own models using K'NEX® sets and discover how simple machines are combined to create the mechanical items we use in everyday life.

Grades 4-5 construct working machines from blueprints, explore their properties and identify the basic machines used to construct them

Grades 6-8 will create small-scale models of common machines such as tow trucks, lawnmowers and elevators, but beware - as in life, there may be challenges which require fast-thinking to achieve their goal! 

Grades 9-12 teams’ ingenuity and analytical skills are put to the test as they navigate a series of cutthroat design challenges to create their working mechanical models!

Investigating DNA

Grades 4-12

Isolate, extract and compare DNA samples in this highly engaging lab which introduces students to the basics of DNA analysis.

Grades 4-8 extract and compare two plant-based DNA samples and discover their similarities and differences.

Grades 9-12 extract and compare a plant-based DNA sample with students’ own DNA samples and identify the similarities between them.

DHDC Crime Lab: The Case of the Missing Mascot

Grades 5-12

HELP! Donnie, the DHDC Mascot, has been kidnapped! Students become crime fighters in this immersive lab experience. Once inside the DHDC Crime Lab, students must use forensic tools to identify the kidnapper and rescue Donnie – before it’s too late!

Grades 5-8 conduct their investigation using fingerprint analysis to identify the dastardly kidnapper while learning how to lift and analyze fingerprints using the same tools are forensic detectives.

Grades 9-12 will conduct presumptive blood tests on a series of unidentified substances and analyze simulated blood samples to catch the culprit and save the day!

ICU: Cow Eye Dissection

Grades 5-12

Investigate the physiology of sight by dissecting a cow eyeball. Students deconstruct a cow eye, examine the individual components, and discover how each works together to collect and process images.

Grades 6-12

Glow: Chemiluminescence

Grades 9-12

Analyze properties of chemiluminescence and bioluminescence in this “enlightening” lab! Students create their own set of glow sticks using the same chemicals and scientific process as their favorite store-bought versions.
