Live science shows capativate audiences of all ages through dynamic experiments, audience participation, and memorable and unique learning experiences. Wether you are hosting your event here at the Discovery Center or holding it at another venue, you can take it to the next level with DHDC Science Live! shows. Program Details

  • On-site programs are available for any audience size, excluding Star Lab.
  • All Science Live! shows are suitable for 4 years old through adults.

Reservation Details

  • For shows at DHDC, seating capacity is 90 people per show.
  • Multiple showings available to accommodate larger groups.
  • For on-site shows, some logistic requirements and audience size limits apply to select shows.  Please see individual show descriptions for details.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Explore the how, why and WOW! of chemical reactions in this amazing program! Audiences will discover how chemical reactions can turn pennies into “gold”; ordinary household products into giant pools of never-ending foam; and which of their friends have acid breath. Guests will dive into chemistry like never before when they watch our chemical concoctions create some astonishing results!

On-location show requirements:

  • 2 tables (minimum 4 ft. long each)
  • Access to water before performance.
  • Access to electricity during performance.
  • Access to a sink after performance.

CRITTERS LIVE!

Meet the DHDC’s smallest residents in this interactive program.  Viewers will have the opportunity to get up-close with the DHDC critters which include snakes; lizards; tarantulas; and small mammals, like sugar gliders or even a chinchilla!  Concepts explored in Critters Live! include life cycles; habitats; differences within species; and learned vs. inherited traits.

For the safety and well-being of our animals, Critters Live! is limited to an audience of 100 people per program, and on-campus programs are limited to one show per day. Travel is limited to locations within 60 miles of Amarillo.

KABOOM!

Oxygen, fuel and an ignition source. That’s all you need for this spine-tingling Science Live! From coffee creamer fireballs to barking dog rocket reactions, KABOOM! explores the science of combustion with demonstrations that will leave your audience cheering for more. 

On-location show requirements: 

  • 1 table (minimum 4 ft. long)
  • Requires a large room with a high ceiling.
  • Cannot be performed outdoors.

SCIENCE BELOW ZERO

Science Below Zero examines some of the chilliest science on the planet.  Viewers will discover the physical changes which occur when solids, liquids and gases are exposed to the extreme cold of liquid nitrogen. The audeince will be amazed as we use liquid nitrogen to power the DHDC Music Machine for the grand finale!

On-location show requirements:

  • 1 table (minimum 4 ft. long)
  • Access to water before performance.
  • Requires a large room with a ceiling at least 8 ft. high.
  • Cannot be performed outdoors when temperatures are above 90 degrees.

THE SCIENCE OF MAGIC

Magician’s secrets revealed! For years magicians have relied on scientific principles for their most amazing illusions.  Audience members will witness tricks such as fire eating and the bed of nails and uncover the science behind the magic.

On-location show requirements:

  • 2 tables (minimum 4 ft. long each)
  • Access to water before performance.
  • Access to electricity during performance.

SCIENCEPALOOZA

Sciencepalooza features the wackiest experiments in the Science Live! collection and explores a variety of science concepts. Demonstrations include the Incredible Shrinking Bag; Egg-citing Physics; Trash Can Chaos, Ruben’s Tube; the Dissolving Spoon and more. Every presentation provides an unparalleled science adventure!

On-campus show requirements:

  • 2 tables (minimum 4 ft. long each)
  • Access to water before performance.
  • Access to electricity during performance.

STARLAB: OUR SKY TONIGHT

(performed on-location only)

StarLab brings the DHDC Space Theater to your location! This fully enclosed portable planetarium projects a full dome, current view of the Panhandle night sky. Similar to the Astronomy Live! Space Theater program, viewers in the Starlab will examine major stars and constellations and discover the mythologies surrounding their origin.

On-location show requirements:

  • Requires a large room with a high ceiling.
  • Access to electricity during performance
  • StarLab can fit a maximum of 30 people per presentation.  Additional rotations available for larger groups.
  • StarLab requires a minimum of 30 minutes to set up prior to show time, and approximately 30 minutes to take down after your show concludes. Please reserve your location space for Starlab accordingly.

UNSEEN FORCES: PHYSICS AT WORK

Everything in our Universe moves and interacts, and forces play a major role in that movement. With giant cannons, a hovercraft and other crazy demonstrations, Unseen Forces investigates the relationship between force and motion and explains how these unseen forces are at work in our daily lives.

On-location show requirements:

  • Access to a sink after performance.

WEATHER WONDERS

The atmospheric elements that combine to create weather work largely unseen. Weather Wonders uncovers these elements through dynamic demonstrations which examine the conditions necessary to create clouds, precipitation, lightning, thunder, tornadoes and other weather phenomena.

ZAP!

Discover the properties of positive and negative charge in this electrifying program! Through hair-raising demonstrations featuring our Van de Graff and Tesla coil, guests will examine the properties of electrical charges, conductors and insulators.

  • Access to electricity during performance
